This week I chatted with a friend who was intersted in started a new career online. During our conversation I realized there was no way I could list everything I have learned, nor could I verbalize it all in ten minutes. Applying for jobs online takes just as much effort as getting an offline position. Here is a short list of ten tips to help you land online jobs.

Top 10 Tips for Landing Online Jobs
1.       Create a cover letter template. Use this template when responding to open positions. Simply tweak the template to fit the current job listing.

2.       Create or update your current resume. Keep online privacy in mind when including personal information on the resume.
3.       Create a professional email.  Ex,     NaySimmons @mail . com  or a personal email on a domain that you already own.  Keeping work and social email addresses separate helps ensure that important emails are never missed.
4.       Create at least one professional online social networking profile. Always use the privacy settings to control who has access to see personal information. Linked In is a good place to consider creating a profile. There are a lot of great job leads posted daily on Linked In.  Add five to twenty new friends each week within the field that you desire to work in. 6.       Apply for jobs directly with employers and private clients through freelance websites. Many of these opportunities can leads to consistent work.
7.       Run from ultra low paying work. Many online ads sound great upfront. The hourly or weekly salary sounds good, and then small details start to change. Never try to work with any company that is not forthcoming about what they are offering. Many companies will reveal after the interview or during the hiring process that the pay will be different than what was originally discussed. Never be afraid to walk away.
8.       Be willing to invest in yourself, with time and/or money. Some freelance job board employers choose to only view bids from people that have paid memberships or feedback in their profile. If the job board is free or if you don’t want to pay a membership fee present yourself professionally in your profile.  Spend an hour or so to take skill tests related to your area of expertise.  Consider buying a single book, ebook, or course that discusses a way to make more money. Master that… then move on. Go to the library or the book store and read for free on ways to sharpen your skills to be more marketable.
9.       Be clear about your desired hourly rate.
·         If you are branching out into other areas check what the professional hourly rate is first. View job postings for entry level positions and with online job boards.
10.   Stay positive during your job search. Envision the life you desire and go after it.

How will I get Paid ?
*Setup direct deposit when using freelance websites. It may take a few business days in order to start receiving deposits.

* Some sites guarantee set hourly rates, or bill by the entire project. If you choose to bill by the entire project always ask for money upfront. 50 percent up front at the beginning of the project is fair for new clients on places like Odesk or Guru.
*  Some legitimate employers do require you to purchase land line phone service, your own headset, computer, and specific computer programs like Windows. If an employer is asking upfront for money for a back ground check or equipment, check them out. Scour online job boards and ask friends that work online if they have heard of that company before.  If you have a bad feeling about a client or a potential job always check it out before investing time or energy into the project.
